The NXS smart mobile Dataterm is a software terminal Telnet client package for remote data access from handset devices via any IP transport. Currently supported and tested on the Symbian® operating system based Nokia 60 series handset models 3650 and 7650 over Bluetooth and GPRS.

Bluetooth for free local access and GPRS / Public Internet for remote access are two examples of IP networks for this client software. Because Bluetooth and GPRS sit below the IP layer in the handset, newer and emerging 2.5G, 2.75G and 3G technologies will be compatible.

The Symbian® operating system at the heart of these Nokia 60 series smart phones provides a rich set of graphical controls and menu systems all aimed at reducing the requirement to use the tiny handset keypads, preferring to use the five way joggle pointer/clicker. The NXS Dataterm has implemented some of these controls, however currently the NXS Dataterm is more about providing easy connectivity combined with smart soft loading menu's and settings for remote data connections to database servers. Integration of both one time password OPIE and one time pad OTP client capability is underway to send passwords and encrypt sensitive data over the Telnet connection. An optional SSH client engine for encrypted secure communications is also currently under development to provide highly secure connections.

The availability of software development kits for C++ on both the Borland and Microsoft development environments provides the means to extend the NXS Dataterm with custom graphical controls specific to a given task. Currently the NXS Dataterm provides connections over TCP/IP with upload/download functions and smart dynamic menus with local data storage for off line use. We have chosen to bundle a third party viewer providing excellent file system navigation, font control and search capabilities. The Nokia 3650 has a large data storage capacity with 128mb removable multi media memory card. It is also worth noting that the NXS Dataterm has a very light traffic footprint and as GPRS is a pay per packet system this helps control your communications costs.
