- Initially appears more expensive however has added benefits
- Uses managed network switches at higher cost
- In most cases can provide service over normal copper phone cable pairs with large cost savings in building rewiring translating into an overall cheaper solution
- Network traffic from a room is identified and billed by a fixed network range assigned to the room
- Front desk involvement can be minimal
- Wireless pass code can safely be supplied to the guest in room enabling Internet use within range of the hotels wireless access points
- In some cases up to 30% cheaper along with reduced benefits
- Uses unmanaged network switches at lower cost
- Cat5 or better twisted pair cabling normally required which may require expensive building re wiring
- Network traffic from a room can only be identified or associated to a room by authentication from the room which means that the guest will have to key in a pass code, sometimes repetitively after inactivity of the connection
- Front desk involvement is much higher eg pass codes will have to be handed out to the guest and in the case where the guest loses or forgets the pass code they will only be able to get a replacement from the front desk after some identification process
- The same room pass code is used for wireless access within the range of the hotels wireless access points
